he 1983 Hans Christian 33 is one of those classic cruising sailboats that immediately feels warm and inviting the moment you step below. Known for its heavy teak interior, traditional craftsmanship, and seaworthy design, the Hans Christian 33 has a cozy charm that makes it a favorite among long-distance cruisers and liveaboard sailors. The midship Pullman berth is one of the most unique spaces on the boat, offering a quiet and comfortable sleeping area tucked alongside the rich woodwork that gives this model its signature character. We worked with a client on their 1983 Hans Christian 33 and upgraded the Pullman area with a custom mattress designed to bring modern comfort to this traditional interior.

For the Midship Pullman Berth, the owners selected our custom 9 inch Gel Memory Foam Pillowtop Mattress. This mattress is shaped precisely to fit the berth, which is especially important in a boat with curved cabinetry and angled hull sides. We construct this mattress with a super comfy 6 inch Medium Density Latex core, then add 2 inches of Gel Memory Foam for a pillow top and finish it with the plushest bamboo quilting. The result is truly The Leader of the Fleet. Below, you can see the mattress installed on the Pullman berth, where it fits neatly into the warm teak surroundings and brings a fresh, bright layer of comfort to the space.

The new mattress gives the Pullman berth a clean and inviting look that pairs beautifully with the traditional joinery of the Hans Christian interior. It is a major comfort upgrade for owners who love the character of a classic cruising sailboat but appreciate sleeping on something that feels more like home.
