You spend one-third of your life snoozing, so why not create a bedroom oasis beginning with its centerpiece? A well-made bed sets the tone for the entire space, inviting a welcoming, comfortable ambiance that’s a pleasure to wake up to in the morning. A good night’s rest goes far beyond figuring out the right mattress. It’s also about selecting high-quality bedding linens that complement your sleep and relaxation style. Here’s everything you need to know to make the perfect bed.
Picking out a mattress is all about personal preference and what is most comfortable for you. Once you have decided on what you will be laying your head down on at night while you dream away, some people start with a mattress pad cover to keep their mattress protected and clean.
Sheets are next! When you crawl between the sheets, you want to feel covered in softness and comfort, not numbers. Thread count is only one part of the equation. Sure, it tells you how many threads are in a square inch of fabric, but linens with the same thread count can vary significantly in quality and how they feel to you depending on the grade of cotton used, the weaving techniques, and finishes. You would choose a fitted sheet, which would fit tightly over your mattress, and mattress pad, and provides a layer of washable fabric between you and your mattress.
Next, would be your flat sheet, or top sheet. It is typically placed between the bedding on top of your bed and the fitted sheet and is in some cases folded over. Our sheet sets come with a fitted sheet, a flat sheet, and two standard pillowcases to put your sleeping pillows in.
Boat Duvet Covers and Coverlets
Now we need something on top of your bed covering up those sheets. On a boat, there are a few options you can have for the top of your bed. A duvet cover with a duvet insert in one option. A duvet cover is a protective layer that slips over the duvet and has a closure. Duvet covers are useful because they add a layer of protection during use and are easily removed and easy to wash. With duvet covers, you can also quickly and easily change the look of your bed and room without having to completely redecorate.
The duvet would then fit snugly inside a duvet cover. Coverlets are also a great option on a boat and are a great way to customize a stateroom to your color and pattern preference. The coverlet cannot be used as a functional blanket. You would have the coverlet on top of your sheets and whatever blanket you decided to use to sleep with would go underneath and you would remove the coverlet to sleep. The coverlet can be made fitted with a seamless corner which will have a tight fit on the bed. It is a great option for a bed that is “free standing” because it will be easier to get around all sides of the bed. The other option with a coverlet is doing it with breaks and flaps. This serves a functional value by giving the client an option to have the coverlet hang over the bumper or tuck it in essentially making the bed a little easier to make because it is not tightly fitted around the sides. This will be a great option for a bed that is not “free standing” and tucked away and hard to get to. You could also choose to do an Italian coverlet.
This style of coverlet can be used as a functional blanket to sleep with, it is lined with our Red Land Cotton on the bottom to make it functional for sleeping. It can also be made to be tucked in and fitted, or to hang over. With any of these options, a blanket is also something you will want to keep you even more comfortable and warm in bed, some people even use their sleeping blanket as the main cover on top of their bed.
Picking out pillows is most of the fun when picking out bedding! Everyone has varying pillow preferences from the more the better, or a simpler pillow set up. We would start with your sleeping pillows in back covered in a pillowcase that usually matches your sheets. These are typically standard size, but there are king size sleeping pillows as well.
Euro Shams come next, a square decorative pillow cover needing a Euro Sham insert that are standardly 26×26. One set up could be three of these at the back of the bed covering your sleeping pillows. Following this set up, you could put two Standard, or King, Shams in front of the Euro Shams. A Standard Sham is a rectangle pillow cover that you would put an insert in and is usually 20×26”. If you are a person who prefers minimal pillows, some choose to go with just Standard Shams to decorate and leave it at that. If you can’t get enough pillows, add some throw pillows into the mix in front of those shams!
We offer pretty much any size, but common sizes are 16”, 18”, 20” square pillows, a 14×24”, and a Boudoir pillow that is 12×16”. A set up we do often is two 18” throw pillows in front of the Shams with one 14×24” in front of those. You can have a ton of fun coordinating these pillows with your top of bed choice making it look stylish and neat! A throw blanket ties up the whole bed making it more than complete, you are more than ready for a fantastic night of sleep.
