he 2004 Catalina 36 is one of those sailboats that simply feels right the moment you step on board. Known for its balanced sailing performance, smart layout, and surprisingly spacious interior, this model has long been a favorite for coastal cruising, weekend getaways, and even light liveaboard life. The forward stateroom on the Catalina 36 is a cozy retreat, and with a few thoughtful upgrades, it can easily feel like a true home away from home.
For this boat, we focused on turning the forward berth into a space you actually look forward to crawling into at the end of the day. The centerpiece of the upgrade was a custom 7 inch Latex Pillow Top Mattress with a firm base, designed specifically for the unique shape of the Catalina 36 forward berth.

This mattress has a sleek 7 inch profile that works beautifully in sailboat staterooms where headroom matters, while still delivering the comfort you would expect from a much thicker mattress. Close your eyes and you will swear you are in a five star hotel bed. We turn the dial to 11 by building the mattress with a super comfortable 4 inch latex core that provides excellent support, then layering 2 inches of ultra soft latex pillow top on top for that plush, pressure relieving feel. Everything is wrapped in our plush bamboo quilting, which adds breathability and a soft hand you notice the moment you lie down. The result is truly The Leader of the Fleet.

Latex is a favorite for boats for good reason. It is naturally mold and mildew resistant, extremely comfortable, helps regulate body heat so you sleep cooler, and it does not absorb odors. Each mattress is custom crafted in California to fit the exact size and shape of your berth and is built to stand up to the rigors of the marine environment. If you have hard to access storage underneath the mattress, we can add a hinge at no additional cost to make life on board that much easier.
To protect the mattress, we added a waterproof mattress protector. Our custom mattress protectors fit over the mattress like a fitted sheet and provide a washable layer of protection. Made with a soft cashmere and polyester blend, they are designed to protect your investment without changing the feel of the mattress. For this Catalina, we added a waterproofing layer for extra peace of mind, which is always a smart choice in a forward berth.

We finished the bed with a Gin and Bale Sheet Set, which includes a fitted sheet, flat sheet, and two standard pillowcases. These sheets are made from 100 percent cotton in a 300 thread count sateen. They are not overly silky, but they do have a beautiful subtle sheen and a soft, relaxed feel that works perfectly for casual cruising. They are the kind of sheets that feel good, wear well, and get better with every wash. The end result is a forward stateroom that feels fresh, comfortable, and inviting, proving that even a classic sailboat like the Catalina 36 can deliver five star sleep with the right bedding.
