he 1988 Catalina 34 MKI is one of the most successful cruising sailboats ever built. Known for its dependable performance, spacious interior, and easy handling, the Catalina 34 became a favorite among sailors looking for a boat capable of both weekend getaways and extended coastal cruising. More than three decades after its debut, these boats continue to sail marinas and anchorages across the country. When the owner of this well-loved Catalina 34 decided it was time to improve comfort below deck, they turned to YachtBedding.com for a custom mattress designed specifically for their aft cabin berth.

One of the most popular features of the Catalina 34 MKI is its private aft stateroom. Tucked beneath the cockpit, the cabin provides a cozy retreat after a day under sail. For this project, we created a custom 7″ Latex Mattress in Medium Density with a hinged design to accommodate the unique access requirements of the berth platform. The result is a mattress that delivers significantly more comfort while maintaining the functionality of the original layout. Our 7″ Latex Mattress, known as The Commodore, is one of our most versatile and popular mattress options for sailboats. Benefits of our custom latex yacht mattresses include that it is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, it helps regulate body temperature for cooler sleeping, it has breathable construction that promotes airflow, and is resistant to absorbing odors. One of the biggest challenges when upgrading sailboat mattresses is working around the unique shapes and limited access common in cruising sailboats. The Catalina 34’s aft berth required a custom shape and hinged construction to ensure the mattress fit perfectly while still allowing access to storage below. Because every mattress we build is made to order, we’re able to maximize sleeping space while maintaining the functionality of the original design. The finished result looks like it came with the boat from the factory, only far more comfortable.
