he 1989 Carver Californian 48 might be one of the most recognizable aft-cabin motor yachts of its era. Known for its expansive living spaces, wide beam, and comfortable cruising capabilities, the Californian 48 was designed with liveaboards and long-range cruisers in mind. Decades later, these yachts continue to be prized for their roomy interiors and spacious aft master staterooms. When the owner of this beautiful Carver decided it was time to upgrade the sleeping experience onboard, they chose a custom mattress solution designed to bring luxury residential comfort to life on the water.

The aft master aboard the Carver Californian 48 is one of the yacht’s signature features. Tucked away for privacy and offering significantly more room than many yachts of its vintage, it’s the perfect place to create a true onboard retreat. For this project, we installed our 9″ Latex Pillowtop Mattress in a Firm Density, creating a sleeping surface that offers outstanding support while still delivering the plush comfort that makes our pillowtop collection so popular.

Many owners assume a firm mattress means sacrificing comfort. The reality is quite the opposite. The firm latex core provides excellent support for the back and joints while the pillowtop layer adds just enough cushioning to create that luxurious floating sensation every boater dreams about after a long day on the water.

We construct the mattress using a supportive 6″ latex core and then add 2″ of ultra-soft latex pillowtop comfort. Everything is wrapped in our signature bamboo quilting, creating a mattress that feels remarkably similar to those found in luxury hotels and high-end residences.

The result is a mattress that delivers exceptional comfort while remaining perfectly suited for the marine environment. Benefits of our latex yacht mattresses include that it is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, it helps regulate body temperature for cooler sleep, it is breathable construction for improved airflow, and it is resistant to absorbing odors.
To complete the upgrade, we also added a Matouk Foundation Mattress Protector. The Foundation Mattress Protector is one of our favorite ways to protect a custom yacht mattress while adding an additional layer of comfort. Designed to fit like a fitted sheet, it provides a washable barrier between the mattress and daily use while adding subtle loft and softness.
